Our He shou wu is prepared according to the Chinese Pharmacopeia as follows.

The tuber of He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum) must be “processed” in order to be used as a regularly consumed tonic herb. Unprepared He Shou Wu does not possess the tonic effects and can have unwanted side effects. When he shou wu is processed with black beans it becomes easier to digest.

The processing method is to stew or steam the freshly picked ho-shou-wu tubers in black soybean (heidou) juice until the soup is exhausted and the processed roots are then dried.

A proportion of 10 parts He Shou Wu to 1 part black beans is used. That is all there is to the “preparation”.

No chemicals are used in the making of “processed” He Shou Wu. Black beans are traditionally attributed with the property of supplementing blood and essence, and prolonged cooking or steaming of the herb is associated with enhancing its enriching and warming nature.
