I Have a Cold or Flu, What Are Some Natural Remedies?


Catching a cold is just the worst.  It’s miserable.

There are some simple remedies you can do to get through it more comfortably, and quickly.

A Sore Throat

Slippery elm mixed with natural honey and rolled into little balls can be used as a lozenge to soothe a sore rough throat.  It’s also a good remedy for any digestive system irritations.  Sage tea is also a great option due to its antibacterial natural, add a dash of natural honey for soothing.

Immune Boost

Herbal teas such as our Breathe Herbal tea blend can soothe the throat and warm the body, whilst giving the immune system the tools it needs for quicker recovery. 

Snot on the chest

For chesty coughs (snot on the chest), Fenugreek as a tea is my go to every day of the week.  Fenugreek has the ability to break up and liquefy thick mucus, making it easier for your body to expel.  You’ll smell of fenugreek whilst taking this herb, as it pushes toxins through your skin.  

To use this herb

  • put a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of freshly boiled water
  • cover and let sit for 5-10 minutes
  • then drink the liquid and eat the seeds
  • drink 3 cups a day, plus increase your water intake

Fenugreek is high in B vitamins, so an added bonus is a little energy kick.

Purify your Area

It goes without saying that keeping your environment germ free is a great way to prevent the cold or flu from bouncing around the family.  Diffusing Four Thieves Essential Oil (and carrying our Four Thieves hand sanitiser for personal use) is a fantastic anti-bacterial option.


Preventing catching a cold or flu can be managed by eating a healthy whole food diet, rich in balanced nutrition.  Elderflower is a great herb to protect you during the flu season.  You can make a syrup from dried or fresh elderflowers (for an easy way of administering to the family and also in a tasty way), or just drink it as a tea daily.  Elderflower does not build up in the system, so needs to be taken when you feel you are hitting that flu season.
